The Purpose Of Accounting

Hello everyone, welcome to a deep dive into the world of accounting. This blog post is based on a lecture by Makoena Mokoena, an expert in the field, who has graciously shared her knowledge with us. Let’s get started!

What is Accounting?

Accounting is a multifaceted process that involves measuring, recording, analyzing, and summarizing financial information. This information is crucial for making economic decisions. Accounting involves identifying, measuring, recording, classifying, and summarizing financial information. It’s important to note that financial information refers to any data that involves money.

Bookkeeping vs Accounting

Bookkeeping and accounting, while related, are not the same. Bookkeeping involves recording daily business transactions in chronological order. It’s a straightforward process with no analysis or interpretation involved. On the other hand, accounting is a more comprehensive process that includes analysis and interpretation. It’s important to note that bookkeeping is a part of accounting.

Understanding Transactions

A transaction is an action that involves an exchange of money for goods and services. Every transaction must have three elements: the date, the details or description of what happened, and the amount of money exchanged.

The Role of Accounting

Accounting plays a crucial role in monitoring progress and aiding decision-making. It allows entrepreneurs to understand their profit or loss, compare their business with other alternatives, and make informed decisions. Accounting also enables the tracking of trade payables (people owed by the business) and trade receivables (people who owe the business).

Moreover, accounting helps the government assess the reasonable amount of tax to be paid by businesses. Not all businesses are eligible to pay tax; this depends on their income level. Accounting records can prove a business’s income level and determine its tax eligibility.

Lastly, accounting ratios allow business owners to compare the results of their business with past performance. This comparison is crucial for monitoring progress and making informed decisions.

The Benefits of ICT in Accounting

In the 21st century, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of accounting. ICT, particularly computers, offer several benefits:

  1. Accuracy: Computers can perform calculations without errors, provided the right information is input.
  2. Speed: Computers can process information quickly, which is crucial in accounting where large amounts of data are handled.
  3. High Volume Processing: Computers can process high volumes of information accurately and quickly.
  4. Ease and Capacity of Storage: Computers offer easy and large capacity storage, making it easy to organize and access information.
  5. Security: Computers offer high levels of security. Information can be restricted using passwords, ensuring only authorized personnel can access it.

In conclusion, accounting is a vital process in any business. It aids in decision-making, monitors progress, and ensures financial transparency. The integration of ICT in accounting has further enhanced its efficiency and accuracy. Stay tuned for our next lesson where we will delve into the accounting equation and ledgers. Until then, happy learning!
